Crafting Steam-inspired Social Studies Lesson
Led by Belle Meade Historic Site’s Education Director, this workshop will highlight the element most often missing from history education narratives – the “how” of history, in other words, the intersection of social studies and STEAM subjects. We encourage you to stretch your lessons beyond the story of what people in the past did by considering how they did it. Our method of lesson planning leads to discussions of historic technologies and establishes a relatable context for students to better understand historical players.
STEAM-inspired history lessons easily lend themselves to hands-on learning and project-based learning experiences. In this workshop, participants will learn a simple 4-step thought process that seamlessly integrates science, art, and empathy into their history curriculum. Come prepared to brainstorm fun and interactive additions to your lessons and we will share some of our best tips for hands-on learning! At the end of the workshop, leave with a ready-to-implement, cross-curricular lesson plan!

If your county requires a travel fee, consider booking one of our History on Wheels in-school enrichment programs for the same day! Our education team will conduct programming for your students during the day, and then lead your teaching team in a workshop after school, meaning you only pay one travel fee. This could save your school up to $50!

We can use whatever platform your school utilizes, including Zoom, Teams, or Google Meet. Normally, it is best for the school to set up the meeting, so that it is easier to invite all teachers. As long as our educator is invited to be the presenter so we can share our screen, everything should go smoothly! We are always open to talk with your technology team to ensure everything is set up and ready to go beforehand.

Your school or district will need to approve this program in order for it to count toward your PD credits. We are happy to speak with administrators regarding the goals and outcomes of the workshops. Participants will receive a signed certificate noting their participation to make record keeping easier.
