Job Title: Historic Interpreter
Department: Interpretation
Reports to: Director of Interpretation
Classification: Part-time or Full-time; Hourly; Non-exempt
Compensation: $17 Hourly

About the Position
The Historic Interpreter plays a crucial role in bringing the rich history of the Belle Meade Historic Site to life for visitors. Responsibilities include delivering engaging tours and educational programs that showcase our heritage. Historic Interpreters collaborate with fellow interpreters and departmental staff to ensure consistency and excellence in our historical presentations.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Conduct tours of the Mansion and site for guests of all ages in a personable and knowledgeable manner, while providing accurate information relevant to the major themes of the site’s history.
- Welcome the public, collect tickets, and provide general directions to guests that pertain to exhibits and points of interest on-site.
- Actively engage guests of the site between tours to enhance their overall experience.
- Display a customer-oriented attitude while interacting with large groups of people daily.
- Assist in providing security for the site, buildings, and collections. Help ensure the safety of guests; respond calmly and professionally to emergencies following all institutional guidelines.
- Participate in training programs and staff meetings to expand knowledge of the site and to strengthen interpretive skills.
- Update and modify tours as new or relevant information becomes available and for changing exhibits.
- Assist with special events and programs, often held on the weekends and during evenings.
- Lead guided educational tours and programs for school-age groups.
- Complete administrative assignments and projects when tours are not in session.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Required Skills/Abilities
- Excellent oral communication skills.

- Able to assimilate information and impart it in an engaging, coherent, and factual manner
- Must demonstrate initiative, leadership qualities, and flexibility.
Education/Experience
- Public speaking and/or teaching experience with an interest in history is ideal.
- Experience working with the general public is a plus.
- High school diploma or GED required. A bachelor’s degree is preferred but not required.
Work Environment/Physical Demands
- Must be available as scheduled, including weekends and holidays.
- Belle Meade Historic Site & Winery is open daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm; the work schedule for this position reflects these hours
- Involves a mix of indoor work for planned events and outdoor activities for walking tours with an exposure to various weather conditions
- Position requires prolonged standing and walking with the ability to bend, stoop, squat, turn and pivot. Stamina is required to navigate uneven terrain and lead tours safely.
- Must be able to provide necessary provisions for individuals with diverse mobility needs.

About the Position
The Lead Historic Interpreter is a management level role within the Interpretation Department. This position collaborates with the Assistant Director and Director of Historic Interpretation to ensure smooth, professional, and guest-centered daily tours and interpretive programs. It requires a leader who thrives on both structure and hospitality – someone who can manage people and processes while setting the tone for exceptional guest experiences. The Lead Historic Interpreter also assists with daily scheduling and ensures newer interpreters receive beneficial guidance aligned with our organization’s values, fostering a supportive environment where they feel comfortable seeking help.
Acting as the departmental supervisor during weekend operations, or when senior leadership is off site, the Lead Historic Interpreter models service excellence, oversees interpreter performance, addresses guests needs, and ensures daily operations run efficiently and effectively.
Duties/Responsibilities
- Deliver historically accurate, engaging, and hospitality-forward tours to a diverse audience.
- In conjunction with the Assistant Director and Director of Historic Interpretation, oversees daily operational flow for interpreters, including scheduling and shift coverage.
- Serve as a liaison between frontline staff and upper management, relaying feedback and resolving real-time concerns.
- Train and mentor new interpreters, reinforcing professional expectations and interpretive excellence.
- Promote and enforce service standards, tour pacing, and hospitality best practices.
- Assumes the role of manager on duty in the absence of the department’s Director and Assistant Director, primarily on weekends.
- Ensure a clean, organized, and welcoming interpreter office environment.
- Collaborate with other departments to ensure a seamless, site-wide guest experience.
- Address customer service issues by understanding the guest’s concerns, identifying the root cause, and presenting viable solutions.
- Assists upper management with projects as assigned
Required Skills/Abilities
- Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, history, education, hospitality, or a related field — or at least two (2) years of relevant professional experience in museums, historic sites, hospitality, tourism, or a related field.
- At least one (1) year of management or supervisory experience in a team-based setting.
- Demonstrated excellence in hospitality and customer service.
- Punctual, highly organized and detail oriented
- Leadership, mentorship, and problem-solving skills.
Strong written and oral communication skills - Dedicated to ongoing learning and professional development within the field of Historic Interpretation
- Proficiency in Google Suite and Microsoft Office, including shared calendars, Excel, and Word.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
- Ability to travel, work weekends, and/or some evenings as necessary in the performance of assigned responsibilities
